Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about learning Urdu
Do I need to learn Urdu to live in Pakistan?
Not strictly necessary - many Pakistanis speak English, especially in urban areas and professional settings. However, learning even basic Urdu greatly enhances your experience, helps you connect with locals, and shows respect for the culture.
How long does it take to learn basic Urdu?
With consistent study (2-3 hours/week), most students can handle basic conversations within 3-4 months. Reading and writing the script takes 2-3 months of dedicated practice. Fluency develops over 1-2 years of regular use.
Is Urdu difficult for English speakers?
The grammar is quite different from English, which can be challenging. However, Urdu uses many English loanwords (especially for modern concepts), making vocabulary easier. The script (Nastaliq) requires practice but is phonetic once learned.
What about Pashto?
Pashto is the language of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region (including Peshawar) and tribal areas. If you're living in or visiting this region, basic Pashto phrases are very helpful. Mrs. Rehab teaches both Urdu and Pashto.
How are the classes conducted?
Classes are conducted via Zoom for online students, or in-person for those in the Peshawar area. Sessions typically include conversation practice, script writing, vocabulary building, and cultural context. Materials are shared digitally.
What do I need to start?
Just a computer/tablet with Zoom, a notebook for practicing script, and enthusiasm! Mrs. Rehab provides all learning materials including worksheets, audio files, and reading exercises.
